“Who Killed Social Media?”
A panel discussion on Social Media vs. Social Web.
Register here.
Social Media, Social Web, Social Networking, Community Director…. what do those terms mean to you and/or your company? Do you or your company understand that Twitter is a platform more akin to good old IM than a social network? Is Facebook a social network or an online community or both? Does it matter? Our panel of venerable experts will attempt to steer us through this topical minefield during the discussion.

Dave Allen – Director of Insights and Digital Media at Nemo Design; @Pampelmoose, pampelmoose.com
Tony “Frosty” Welch – Web, Community and Social Media Strategy Personal Systems Group at HP, Community Manager for theNextBench.com; @frostola, frostyland.com

Speaker Bios:
Dave Allen is Director of Insights & Digital Media, and Community Director for Nemo. Forming the company’s future strategies for Social Web, Dave manages the company’s digital footprint via several popular blogs. He also advises Nemo clients like Nike, Hewlett Packard, Skullcandy, Bell Helmets and Smith Optics on Social Web strategies. Dave is also the Founding member and bassist of Gang of Four, and Founder of music site Pampelmoose.com.
Tony “Frosty” Welch is currently busy defining the social media strategy for web and community efforts for the Personal Systems Group at HP. He’s also the Community Manager for TheNextBench.com, which will be rapidly expanding to cover PSG’s portfolio. He’s been building websites since 1996, and was at Sun for nearly 10 years designing and developing their major web presences.
James Todd works at Radar Networks as a Software Engineer on various components of Twine (twine.com), which is a free “Interest Network” management service, enabling people to “Tie it all together” … both the obvious and at times not so obvious. Twine at it’s core is built on open Semantic Web technologies upon which resides a prototypical Social Network application, but one that is not strongly bound to any particular domain. Previously, James has worked at Sun Microsystems for a number of years working on projects such as JXTA/P2P, Tomcat, and eCom/eReg initiatives.
Matt Savarino has over 10 years of experience in the action sports industry and is the Lead Information Architect at K2 Sports in Seattle. Matt is also the creator of Ridertech, a community focused on providing riders with location-based services and mobile applications. Ridertech currently operates the two most popular action sports applications on Facebook, a Twitter directory for the industry, and mobile/iPhone apps for locating places to ride.
Lee Crane is a blogger and commentator who has been involved in redefining action sports media for the past two decades. Online since 1984, Lee has often been accused of publishing several influential, anonymous websites including Flakezine.com, Sacklunch.com, and most recently Boardistan.com. The former Director of Digital Content for TransWorld Media, Crane was responsible for the development of the TransWorld Matrix of websites. He launched Snowboarding Online in 1996 as part of the AOL Greenhouse Project and was the co-founder and founding editor of The Mammoth Times, a weekly newspaper based in Mammoth Lakes, California.
Marshall Kirkpatrick, the panel’s moderator, is Vice President of Content Development at ReadWriteWeb, and also its Lead Writer. He hails from Portland, Oregon. Prior to joining RWW in September 2007, Marshall was Director of Content at SplashCast Media. During 2006 he was Lead Blogger at TechCrunch.
